U12 Football & Hurling Skills Competition Roscommon Coaching and Games Development football and hurling GPO’s will be in contact with all clubs regarding the dates and times of our regional and county U12 skills finals in both codes. Connacht U12 football skills finals are on Friday October 5th at 7pm in the Connacht COE, hurling on Friday October 12th at 7pm. B. Motivational Quotes The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. -- Vince Lombardi You can't make a great play unless you do it first in practice. -- Chuck Noll Never let your head hang down. Never give up and sit down and grieve. Find another way. -- Satchel Paige Things that hurt, instruct. -- Benjamin Franklin You can motivate players better with kind words than you can with a whip. -- Bud Wilkinson Coaching Tips Always plan sessions in advance. 1. Always make sure all footballs/sliotars are on the ground or in front of you when you are speaking to the group to achieve full attention. 2. Keep all instructions short and precise. No rambling, children will lose focus. 3. Use the IDEA method. (Introduce,Demonstrate,Execute,Attend). A child remembers more of what they see rather than what they hear. 4. Keep your head up and speak loud and clear to the whole group while using your body language to assert yourself. 5. Fill your sessions with encouragement. Children will learn more in a positive environment. Always find a way to compliment every child within your group. 6. If a drill is not working for you - change it!! Have the confidence to say "lets try something different". 7. Most important - HAVE FUN. If you are having fun that will always transfer to the children which will make for a great training session. Camogie U8 Camogie:Well done to our U8 camogie girls who played in a Camogie Blitz in Four Roads yesterday morning. They did so so well and arr showing great skills. Thank you to Four Roads for hosting. Training continues on Fridays. Pictured our the U8 & U10 Camogie girls U12 Camogie (Eagles):Well done to our U12 camogie girls and Sean our little mascot who defeated Tulsk earlier today. U16 camogie: We played Athleague in Lisnamult in the U16 championship. This was a very one-sided affair with the Gaels scoring a lot of goals in the first half to a single point for Athleague. Management rested our strongest players in the second half with a view to balancing out the sides. Our next game is away to Four Roads on Monday 3rdSeptember at 6.30pm. Players are asked to be at Four Roads pitch at 5.45pm please. Junior camogie: Last Tuesday on a very wet evening we played Tulsk in the Junior Camogie ‘B’ Final in Lisnamult. We started slow and unfortunately Tulsk capitalised on our early mistakes. Although it is a 15 a-side competition, Tulsk insisted that they only had 13 players and it only became apparent during the first half that Tulsk had three subs in their dugout. We went in to the dressing rooms at half time six points down and given the conditions it would have been very easy to give up and hand the game to Tulsk. We made some changes and summarised the key areas where we needed improvements and went out determined to give it everything in the second half. However, disaster struck in the first five minutes when Tulsk scored two consecutive goals leaving us with a deficit of 12 points to overcome. Our girls found themselves having to dig deep then but they found their character and fought hard to claw back the game. With only minutes to go we managed to bring the deficit back to a single point after a shot at goal skimmed over the bar. Shortly after, Colleen Kelly struck for a point to level it up but the umpire waved it wide. The puckout ended up in Tulsks’s hands and down the field they went and got the final point to win by two. There was great support from the Gaels at the match and we’d like to thank you all sincerely for coming out in the rain and for sticking with us all year. Of course the girls were disappointed but this shouldn’t be seen as a big loss since all of our players on the night with the exception of Colleen are U18 and five of the girls who played on the night are U16. We have performed well this year at this level and it has been good preparation for the minor championship which will be run off in October. LGFA U8 & U10 Football: Training continues Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm. U14 Football: Roscommon Gaels 5-12, Clann na nGael 4-5 Congratulations to our u14 girls who are now through to the County final after securing victory over Clann na nGael in the semi final this evening in Lisnamult. Goals from Ava Mulry 3, Zara Fallon 1, Penalty from Ava Mulry 1 and points from Claire McNeill 3, Chloe Donoghue 2, Ava Mulry 5 and Ali Byrne 1, Eimear O’Farrell 1 helped us to maintain our lead and secure victory. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 1-13, Boyle 2-10. Many thanks to everyone in St Croans for their hospitality on Saturday and for having the pitch in such great condition. Connacht GAA – S&C Course (F/H) This course has been developed in order to give coaches an opportunity to gain greater knowledge in the area of physical fitness, or as it has become more commonly known in recent years as strength and conditioning. It allows coaches to increase their understanding of the many aspects associated with strength and conditioning and to be able to safely and correctly implement programs designed from the Connacht GAA Strength and Conditioning staff. A follow on course which is in the process of being developed will allow coaches to develop and safely implement programs. The first pilot of the course was rolled out in January 2015 with a group of 25 academy coaches from each of the provincial counties in both hurling and football. This course was reviewed and has since been ran with another group of academy coaches and one group of club coaches from each of the 5 provincial counties. The course is the first of its kind in the GAA in terms of Strength and Conditioning. All the theoretical learning is provided on-line through a specially designed interactive SCORM used through the new GAA e-learning website. This is allowing us to make the most of the coaches’ time and moving away from the traditional gathering to watch a tutor give presentations. The theory side of the course can be done through the GAA e-learning portal at any stage over the designated period of time which can accommodate coach’s personal schedules. For the practical side of the course the coaches come together for practical’s on the various modules and group led discussion. Once the process has been completed the coach must demonstrate competency in the areas covered during the practical sessions Modules include: 1. Demands of Gaelic Games (Football and Hurling) 2. Basic Science Theory of Gaelic Games 3. Fitness Testing and Functional Assessment 4. Warm Up and The Recovery Process 5. Conditioning for Gaelic Games 6. Supervision of a Body Weight Resistance Training Program To Apply: • Coaches must have completed an Award 1 coaching course • Must be coaching in their own club If interested in taking course please contact John Donnellan (086-0402081) on Monday 27 Aug. Camogie Junior Camogie: Our Junior camogie team take on Tulsk in the County Junior Camogie ‘B’ final on Tuesday evening in Lisnamult; throw-in at 8pm. Since Tulsk are missing some players it has been agreed that the final will be a 12-a-side game. The team has been training since early May and has performed well in all Championship games. The girls also benefited from a number of challenge matches along the way so are well prepared for this final. All support would be appreciated if you could come along. U16 Camogie: The girls unfortunately lost out to Padraig Pearses during the week in their second championship game. Their next game will be on Wednesday evening this week; details will be confirmed later. Jamesie O'Connor Camogie: Many thanks to Riona McGuinness for arranging for Jamesie O Connor to take a session with our U16, Minor and Junior players last Saturday morning in Lisnamult. Jamesie won two All-Ireland Senior Hurling medals with Clare when they made their breakthrough in the ‘90s and he also won a Club Senior Hurling All-Ireland medal with his Club Door-Barefield. Many thanks to Jamesie for attending and imparting some of his knowledge and experience during the hour and a bit he spent with our players; 28 of whom turned up. The morning was glorious and Jamesie put the girls through their paces, focusing on their first touch, their footwork and their reading of the game. He explained that hurling/camogie has basic skills and the top teams in the country are doing the same basic skills in their training as the girls are doing in the Gaels. The feedback suggests that the players really enjoyed this session and Jamesie left them all by saying “the skill level is there; its just vital to keep practicing”. Coaching Tip : Develop Your Shooting from Distance Let's assume you have a squad of 30 players and only one pitch on which to train. You'd really like to work on shooting from distance in a game situation but the 15v15 set-up doesn't lend itself to it. Well, here's one recipe! Take out two goalkeepers and put them in goals at either end. Set out a line of markers across the pitch about 30m from goal. Do likewise at the other end of the pitch. Now take your players and create four teams - red, blue, green, yellow [7 outfield players in each]. Play Red v Blue inside the zone created by the two lines of markers [i.e. in the middle 70m of a typical pitch]. No outfield player may enter the 30m zones close to either goal. Effectively these become the goalkeepers' areas only. Ask the 'keepers to take kick outs as normal and let play develop. To speed up play, the goalies should always have a spare ball set up for the next kick-out. Players may only score from outside these zones. Play a 10-minute game. So...do the Greens and Yellows simply wait about and get cold while this game progresses? Not at all. If you think about it, the 30m zones at either end of the pitch should only be used for kick-outs. Why not set up a drill inside each zone, staying closer to the corners than to the goals? For example - run a tackling exercise for 4 minutes in one corner and a catching exercise in the other corner for the same period. The drills will not get in the way of the game. Swap the Greens and Yellows over, run the drills again and there's the 10 minutes used constructively. Now play Greens v Yellows in the game and let the Reds and Blues work on the drills. Swap once more and you have a 45 minute session after warm-ups. You'll find that the game not only promotes shooting from distance, but also shows players the value of ball being played quickly and accurately upfield rather than across the park. The game also forces players to work harder and to get the ball into the shooting area before the other team has an opportunity to regroup. B. County Go Games Football Blitz Roscommon Coaching and Games Development Annual County Go Games football blitz for all U8 & U10 clubs is on Saturday August 25th in the Connacht COE. Our Football GPO’s will have all the fixture schedule and times for clubs early next week. Our Go Games day is sponsored by the Roscommon Herald. C. Some of our club Coaches 2018 Camogie U12 Camogie: Roscommon Gaels U12 (Eagles) camogie team took on Oran in an exciting and electric match on Saturday morning in Lisnamult. The teams started with 9 aside moving to 10 aside for the second half. Some eagles were missing for the match but the team of 10 stood strong with great heart and fought for every ball. Gaels scored 3 goals against a very strong wind in the first half and came out fighting in the second half to win the game with a goal in the final seconds leaving the score at Roscommon Gaels 7:2 to Oran 6:4. The Eagles have won all but one of their matches so far in the league and have 3 more matches to play. Thanks to everyone who turned out and to the parents for umpiring etc. Training continues at 6.30pm on Friday evening. U16 camogie: The U16 girls took on St Dominics on Wednesday evening in our first match of the U16 camogie championship this year. Our team started slowly and St Dominics took full advantage, clocking up a score of 3:5 to 0:1 by half time. The clouds descended and it was very wet during the first half which made playing difficult but it was the same for both sides. With seven minutes to go in the first half our team started moving up the gears and having made a few important position changes the Gaels found their rhythm. The Gaels second half performance was light years ahead of that of the first half. Here the Gaels shone throughout just as the sun also shone through the clouds. We closed off the threats from St Dominics and outscored our opponents by 1:6 to 0:2 in the second half. However, we paid the price for the slow start and the final score went to St Dominics 3:7 to 1:7. A strong performance overall but there is room for improvement. Junior camogie: The girls took on Four Roads in a challenge last Tuesday evening in Lisnamult. This was a great game with no competition pressure and players were able to let themselves go and express themselves on the pitch right from the throw-in. There were some very good passages of team play on both sides and our girls showed off their continually developing maturity and intelligence on the field of play. We are hoping to arrange another challenge match for Tuesday 21st; confirmation will follow. Our Junior Camogie ‘B’ final against Tulsk is still waiting to be fixed but at the moment it looks like the 28th August, possibly in Oran. LGFA U8 & U10 Football: Training continues Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm. In practical terms, this means that when there are two matches being played in Lisnamult, the two teams from each respective match must be accommodated in a front dressing room and the dressing room directly behind it so that players from one match are not mixing with players from another match in the same toilet/shower area. Cash for Clobber We are now ready to accept your bags of clothes, curtains, bed clothes, shoes, bags and belts at The Hyde Centre. What boot studs should you choose There has been a significant increase in knee injuries in junior and senior players in Rugby / GAA, Camogie, football & hurling. Many of these injuries can be prevented by small changes in the footwear of the players, the recent trend is to wear boots with triangular studs , when the foot is planted in the ground the player tries to rotate the foot and the foot due to the triangular stud is staying planted in the ground , thus causing a severe rotation of the knee joint where injury is then sustained( particularly ACL/PLC Ruptures) .With a rounded stud the stud rotates effectively and the knee is rotating in line with the foot therefore no excessive pressure is put on the knee joint. It may be worth thinking about when purchasing your next pair of boots. C. Cut the Queues One of the most annoying sights in coaching is a long queue of players lining up to take part in a drill or an exercise. Who can state a valid reason for a queue of 8, 9 or 10 players [or more], each waiting in turn for two seconds of action? All coaches, when designing drills or exercises, should look carefully at how the WORK: REST RATIO pans out. If an exercise means that a player has 2-3 seconds of movement for a ball, followed by 30-40 seconds of lining up for the next bus, there is something wrong with the drill set-up. Think the exercise through and divide the group or increase the number of footballs being used - do anything except let the queue continue to form and the players continue to lose out! If the drill involves jogging, a good rule of thumb is a work: rest ratio of 1:1. Should the emphasis be on speed, then set a ratio of 1:4 or 1:5. In effect, this means that you simply include two players in a queue for the jogging exercise and five or six players maximum in the speed drill. The numbers used will determine the work: rest ratio. Camogie U8 & U10 Camogie: Training continues as normal 6.30pm Friday evenings. U12 Camogie: The Eagles played the Hawks in the third round of the County U12 competition. It is always a tough match to play each other but it was a very competitive, skilful and free flowing encounter. The two teams racked up a total of 23 scores as the game ebbed and flowed one way and then the other. It was clear to see that the hard work being put in at training is paying off as the girls competed for every ball and several players on both sides got on the score sheet. A special mention to the girls who volunteered for goalkeeper throughout the game and made some mighty last ditch saves. All in all is was a great game played in a friendly atmosphere and we were all in no doubt that the improvement shown in all Gaels u12 camogie players on the day was the real winner on the day. U13 Camogie: Roscommon Gaels U13’s Camogie team travelled to Ahascragh to play Fohenagh/Ahascragh in the North County League Friday last. We were level at half time but then Fohenagh/Ahascragh notched up a lot of scores in the first 20 minutes of the second half of the game and our girls were unable to recover from that. The feedback from the Runners is extremely positive, particularly noting the community spirit that the runners feel both during the run and while enjoying refreshments after the event. It is indeed a community event which couldn’t happen without the support of all the community especially our local sponsors. Each sponsor regardless of level of donation given is vital to the continued success of the event. The contributions made by the stewards, the local Community Employment Scheme, the Businesses who supply refreshments, all the volunteers, and indeed all those who come out to support the runners in the lead up to and on the day of the event. This support highlights the community spirit so clearly felt by the participants in their feedback. All this goes to make Ros Go Run an increasingly popular event. Ros Go Run are delighted to announce that MS Ireland are again the main beneficiary of the 2018 event. This will be our fifth year in partnership with them and to date the event has contributed €7,500 00 to the fundraising efforts of MS Ireland. Club Development Fundraising draw 2018 After months of hard work and promotion our very successful club development draw took place last Sunday night in Doorlys Corner House. The decision to have the development draw in the summer instead of in December was taken by the Executive in the Spring and the finance committee have put a lot of work into the planning, organising, distribution, promotion and sell of this fundraiser to assist in the financing of our club for 2018. In excess of €22,000 was raised which is an outstanding figure and the final total will be confirmed in the coming days. A big thank you to our sponsors who were, again, most generous in their donation of prizes for our draw. The business community of Roscommon town and its environs are under severe pressure from all fronts in relation to financial support of the very many worthy organisations in the Roscommon area. They were more than happy to support our draw and donated very attractive and lucrative prizes. Please thank our sponsors when you see them and more importantly please support them and their businesses in return for their support of Roscommon Gaels. Our finance committee under the Chairmanship of Cahal Mahon has worked tirelessly over the past few months on this project. The committee of Cahal Mahon, Tom Fitzmaurice, Harry Hoare, Frank Nally, David Waldron, Paul Biesty, Niamh Kilmartin, Anthony Clogher Seamus Carthy and Teresa Hession have put in a huge amount of time and effort and have ensured that no stone was left unturned to make this draw successful. There was massive commitment involved and as with any fundraiser it has to be driven to ensure that all parts of the club get involved and contribute to the success of the draw. There was a great sense of purpose and the committee harnessed the help of people to not alone sell individually or through our club teams but also at other major events and matches that happened in the locality as well as selling in the town at the weekend. This was a major factor in contributing to the success of the draw. Thanks also to the club members, coaches and officers who gave of their time to assist with the distribution, promotion and selling of tickets over the past number of weeks. Thank you to each and every member of the finance committee for their work, time, energy, effort and enthusiasm and for the part they played in this draw and for making it the success it was. Financing a large GAA club which fields and caters for as many codes and as many teams as Roscommon Gaels does is a mammoth task and it is one that should not be left to a small group. When we all take ownership of the financing of our club and help in whatever we can then the task becomes less onerous, By assisting and supporting club fundraisers, club lotto etc we will have the required monies to run and further invest and develop Roscommon Gaels club to its true potential. So finally a really big thank you to everyone who sold and bought tickets for the development draw. To our members and the wider community’s we are very grateful for your continued support of Roscommon Gaels GAA club. It is much appreciated and it will contribute greatly to the further development of our club. 1st Prize Declan Duke winner of Microsoft Pro Laptop Worth €1,350 2nd Prize Aidan Heneghan winner of 2 Bedroom Holiday apartment in Portugal worth €1,000 for 1 week 3rd Prize David Coyle, Winner of the All Ireland Hurling Tickets x 2 4th Prize Vera Mahon, Winner of the All Ireland Football Tickets x 2 5th Prize Fainche Dorrian, Winner of Manchester United home match tickets x 2 plus flights and accommodation 6th Prize Brian O’Malley, Winner of 3-1-1 Reclining Suite of Furniture from Gannon’s Image Furniture 7th Prize Donald Feeley, Winner of €500 for McNulty’s Furniture 8th Prize Damien Hannon, Winner of 500 litres home heating oil from DG Oil 9th Prize Michelle Kearney, Winner of 50 bales of Briquettes 10th Prize Noel Beattie, Winner of 50 bales of Briquettes 11th Prize Michael Lohan, Winner of 50 bags of Firewood Timber from A Clogher & G Kelly 12th Prize Walter Burke, Winner of Golf Green Fees x 4 – Heritage Golf Resort 13th Prize P Burke, Winner of Gold Green Fees x 4 – Roscommon Golf Course 14th Prize Cian Connaughton, Winner of a customised gum shield worth €75 donated by Eleanor Keaveney 15th Prize Kevin Glynn, Winner of dinner x 2 at Darcy Twelve’s Restaurant Clifden, donated by Shane Regan 16th Prize Gary Stephens, Winner of Family Portrait Session plus 12x10 framed print & 3 5x7 prints valued at €200 donated by Michelle Hughes Walsh Photography 17th Loretta Hoare, winner of Orla Kiely handbag donated by Eight Til Late Good Luck Best of luck to Siofra Hession who plays in Croke Park in the exhibition game during the All Ireland final between Dublin and Tyrone. Reminder : GAA Coach Education Manuals To support the Coach Education programme, a range of manuals have been developed and are available to download from the GAA Learning website e.g... • Award 1 Youth Coaches manual • Award 1 Adult Coaches manual • Award 1 Coaches Logbook • Foundation Coaches Manual • Fun Do Coaches Resource • Go Games Recommended Rules for Football • Go Games Recommended Rules for Hurling B. Coaching: Coach10/MVA Coaching Model - (Know What, Learn How & Understand Why?) We are all busy coaching our respective teams. Occasionally it is good to stop and think how we as Coaches can challenge ourselves to improve. Check out the very interesting and informative COACH 10 Model video on the GAA Learning website. Coaching tips: 1. Look to help each athlete achieve their best, no matter what that level is. Not all athletes want to be the world champion. 2. Be innovative. Be creative. Dare to be different. 3. Try not to over-coach. You don’t need to talk ALL the time. 4. Never lose confidence in yourself. You can do it! 5. Encourage your athlete to have ownership of the program. 6. Maintain good appearance, look like a professional. 7. Technology is your ally not your enemy. Use it wisely. 8. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Mental toughness is still a key component of successful competition. 9. Adopt the D.R.A.M.A. approach ” Do, Record, Analyse, Modify, Act” 10. Confront problems calmly by talking directly with the athlete – don’t rely on rumour, C. Roscommon Gaels : Nursery Programme 2018 Coaches A BIG Thank You to our coaches who managed the initial Club Nursery Programme this year. This has been a great success and Declan Hussey in particular deserves credit for firstly identifying a specific need within his U8 Football Group last year and then setting about putting in place the groundwork to launch the Nursery Programme this year. Some of the Nursery Coaches L-R: Colm Donnelly, Seamus O’Neill, Francie Noone, Enda Daly, Karl Rose, Ciaran Nugent Michael Belton. The challenge over the winter months will be to develop a Nursery Programme covering F&H which is resourced and ready to roll out in spring 2019. Mouth guards are Mandatory Since January 1st 2014, it has been mandatory for players in all grades to wear a mouth guard in all Gaelic football games and practice sessions. The introduction of this rule has led to a drop of 37% in the number of dental injury claims made via the GAA Injury benefit fund, resulting from incidents in Gaelic football training sessions and matches in grades up to Minor in 2013. At adult level a similar drop of 39% has occurred, proving the benefits of wearing a mouth guard in reducing the risk of dental injuries Key Points • All Gaelic footballers must wear a mouth guard in practice sessions and matches. • It is the responsibility of each individual player to use a mouth guard • A properly fitted mouth guard is the best available protective device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports related dental injuries • Players can be sent-off in a game for not wearing a mouth guard • Players will not be covered under the GAA player injury scheme if they don’t comply with the mouth guard rule • No Mouth guard? No Game! Mouth guard Exemption A player can apply for a mouth guard exemption application from which can be requested by e-mailing [email protected] The player in question must provide supporting medical evidence clearly stating why a mouth guard cannot be worn Further information on the above is available at the following link: http://learning.gaa.ie/ mouthguardshurlinghelmets If you have any queries in relation to the above please do not hesitate to contact Gearóid Devitt - GAA Player Welfare Officer @ [email protected] / 01-8658610 Camogie U8 & U10 Camogie: Training continues as normal 6.30pm Friday evenings. Tickets for the Development Draw have now been circulated among all members/families for sale. This is an essential fundraiser required for funding the day to day expenses associated with the running of the club and the fielding of 31 teams across all ages and codes. Further fundraising options will need to be considered and approved by the club if this Draw is not fully supported including: • Introducing an annual levy on all families/members to be paid at Registration Date. • Membership of the weekly lotto. It only costs €2 per week to be a member of the lotto with an opportunity to win the jackpot - currently €10,000. (Consider joining the lotto today). Tickets can be purchased online via the club website. www.roscommongaels.ie Remember that the 123 people who are coaching your family members are volunteers and give their time freely. Significant works have been undertaken by the Club which we can be very proud of which provide excellent facilities for all our players but maintenance of the facilities and future development depends on members fully supporting fundraising events such as this Draw. A small number of club members have devoted their time to arranging prizes for this Draw, circulating the tickets and selling tickets at recent GAA events in the town. New volunteers are always welcome... Your support is required. All the prizes have been generously donated by committed club members. Please Note: • The average annual running cost of the club is €98,000. • The annual registration fees/membership fees that are collected from you annually are paid to Croke Park for Affiliation and Insurance purposes with no financial benefit to the club whatsoever: • The club is depending on weekly lotto sales and fundraisers such as this one to fund club activities. • The lotto teams need new members to join in the weekly Saturday night lotto sales if we are to continue with this weekly fundraiser. (If it is discontinued then significant levies will need to be introduced for the club to fund its activities going forward.) The draw will take place on Saturday August 11th. Further tickets are available if you can identify takers or if you feel you can sell more. The date set for the draw cannot be extended as the All Ireland Hurling Final will take place on August 19th All sold tickets and money are to be returned to McNeill’s Food store by August 4th or can be given to any coach or executive member during the week. Coaching Tip : From Technique to Team play One of the more difficult things to coach to young players is the need to modify their individual styles for the good of the team. If you have spent time ensuring that players are comfortable on the ball, it means you have worked on kicking, catching, lifting, blocking, tackling, shooting, evasion skills and solo running. The most attractive of these skills to a young player is very often 'solo running'. The feeling the player gets when he/she can run while making a ball spin from toe to hand is tremendous. Many players want to use this technique as often as possible. So, when you step in to coach team play and take players to another level, some see it as a denial of the right to try out this great skill of solo running. However, it has to be done. There are no easy answers, but if you explain that you recognise their position and, at the same time, remind them that your job is to take them to higher and higher levels of play [i.e. adding more skills to their repertoire] you may find it easier to introduce. Conditions, limits, modifications....whatever you choose to call them, must be set for players to experience the beauty of good teamwork and to learn how passing, support running and shooting can bring as good a feeling as individual solo running. Remember.....you may only have to limit a few players at a time, rather than impose a blanket ban on all solo running. One trick is to take a team aside [e.g. in a 9v9 game] and choose two of the players from one team who must play the ball immediately. Only inform their team-mates [not the opposition] and let them respond to this for a five or ten minute spell. The roles may be rotated among the team to let all practise. This lets you see how well two players can change their games to benefit team play and how quickly their team-mates learn to make themselves available for passes from them. Try it out - soon! B. Coaching Tip : Progress or Regress For those of you, who coach our youngest Gaels; think carefully before you break for the winter. Calling time at the end of September and resuming again in March will mean for some, little or no activity for up to five months. Granted, quite a few will fill the gap with other sports and activities, but few will hone their Gaelic football or hurling or camogie skills during the close season. If you're lucky enough to have access to a hall or gym or leisure centre, why not devise a weekly programme for players based on developing both sides? There is no better way to work on left and right sides than to use a rebound wall in a hall. Coaches can spend time in a confined area and with smaller numbers, checking technique through the 'Head, Hands, Feet' method and preparing children for the forthcoming outdoor season. The secret is to identify groups of no more than 20 and to ensure that the coach to player ratio is at no more than 1:5. C. National Hurling Development : Provincial Coaching Workshops 2018 Venue & Date: October 20th. Connacht Centre of Excellence, Ballyhaunis, Co. Other than Lots of water and fresh fruit, what other advice do you need to give players?? In a match situation all to agree water break after 15 mins. For coaches, reduce volume and time spent training, be efficient with time a strong 40-50 mins will be more effective than a long 1 hr and 15 in this heat. You are going to laugh frozen facecloths on the back of the neck to get the core temp down at half time! Keep players from overheating esp. in camogie hurling games? Get the helmets off as much as possible. A good biofeedback chart to use with players which forms part of the puzzle. Educate them on monitoring urine colour as a feedback tool for hydration status. Electrolyte/sodium drink can also be homemade. 1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 litre bottle water Sugar free cordial for taste. Camogie U8 & U10 Camogie: Training continues Friday evenings at 6.30pm. U12 Camogie: U12 continue to train Friday Evenings at 6.30pm. U14 Camogie: Hard luck to our U14 Camogie Girls who were defeated by a better Four Road’s side on Wednesday Evening in the County Final in Oran. It was a tough day for our girls, but that being said, they are a very young side who will learn a lot from their game and will take it with them going forward. They are a great bunch of girls who just came up against a better team on the day. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 1-3 Four Roads 2-8. This is not the last you’ve seen of these girls!! Many thanks to all who have supported us all season, especially those who travelled to Oran on Wednesday. It is very very much appreciated. Finally a massive Thank You to the Peppermill who kindly sponsored the half-zip tops for all of the players. The girls are delighted with them. Junior Camogie: The final round of the Junior camogie championship took place last week and our girls travelled to Woodmount to play Padraig Pearses. This was the battle we expected it to be as Pearses play hard and show no mercy. We had 15 players with us and each one gave 110% in this game. It was really nip and tuck for the first half with each side trying to exert their dominance on the game. The half time score was 1:3 to 2:2 with the Gaels behind by just two points, our first half goal coming from Niamh McCourt. When the second half got underway Pearses got a third goal followed by a point to increase their lead by 6 points but the character of the Gaels girls shone brightly and they never gave up. Their second half tally was 3 goals, provided by Amy McNeill, Colleen Kelly and Ella Killion. Ella Killion also put over 3 points from placed balls and the Gaels led the game by the minimum going into the final 5 minutes. Unfortunately, a late goal resulting from a good run by their half forward line clinched it for Pearses. Final score 5:5 Pearses, 4:6 the Gaels. Overall the Gaels gave a mighty performance which now takes them into the County Roscommon Junior ‘B’ Camogie Final to be played on 11th August in Woodmount. A win would see us play in Connaught. All support welcome. LGFA U8 and U10 Football: Our U8 and U10 continue to train and have fun Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm. If there are any parents who wish to help out any evening your help is more than welcome. U14 Football: Our U14 girls played Brigid’s this evening in the Division 1 Championship it was a tough game for our girls who fought hard. Unfortunately Brigids came away victorious. U16 Football: Our U16 Football are playing minor and there is a challenge match organised for tomorrow evening in Lisnamult against St Ciaran’s at 7.30pm. Minor Football: Our Minor Girls played their first round of the Championship against Four Roads last Thursday evening in Four Roads. Our Minor girls were unlucky in their efforts in their Championship opener, a good performance in the second half was in vain as Four Roads got the better of them. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 3-5 Four Roads 4-6. A Challenge match has been organised tomorrow evening at 7.30pm in Lisnamult against St. Ciarans. Junior Football: Our game against Ballinameen that was to be played today has been pushed out to the 2nd of September by County Board. Hurling U12 Hurlers: U12 boy’s played round 2 of their hurling league on Friday Evening against Padraig Pearses in Lisnamult. The lads built on their previous performance and again played their hearts out. After conceding 4 fortious goals in the first half the lads battled back to within 3 points, now they were in the ascendency and eventually ran out of time. The panel was David King, Conor Mulry, Eoin Keavney, Hugh O’Connor, Odin Fallon, John McGuinness, Conor Grogan, Lochlainn Mulry, Brian Geraghty, Ciaran Mulry, Cathal Mulry and Harry King. Football U14 Football: Well done to our U14 lads who defeated Clan na Gael in the Division 1 Championship by 1 point. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 2-16 Clan na Gael 4-09. U16 Football: Pictured below is our U16 team who played St Ciaran’s today in Championship. The lads put in a solid performance and deserved their victory of Roscommon Gaels 2-10 to St. Ciaran’s 0-5. It was great to have nearly a full panel to pick from. We have put ourselves in a great position with 3 wins from 3 games. A big thanks to all the lads for their efforts today and we look forward to our remaining two games. Junior Football: Hard luck to our Junior Lads who had a tough game against Elphin last Friday evening. Message from Roscommon Gaels Finance Committee Tickets for the Development Draw have now been circulated among all members/families for sale. Return of unsold tickets is defeating the purpose of this fundraiser so if you do not sell the tickets allocated to you, then please consider buying the tickets yourself. Please promote the draw to friends and family members at home and abroad. Don’t leave it to others to have to remind you to return the sold tickets and money. Do it by August 4th please.
