Roscommon Gaels History Committee are currently compiling the history of Roscommon Town GAA. We are looking for submissions from any families that have had members play for generations for Roscommon town clubs, from Eoghan Rua's/St. Comans through to the current Roscommon Gaels club. If you would like to make a submission about your families involvement please contact Orla Fleming PRO for more details on 086-8178259 or email on [email protected].
The article should contain between 100 to 150 words, and be a brief account of successive generations of the one family that have played for Roscommon Gaels Club. If there is a photo of the generations that would be very welcome, especially if it is digitally available. Please note that the submission will be subject to editorial review and no guarantee can be made that the submission can be printed as submitted. On August 8th, 2022 the Under 11 Footballers travelled to Croke Park, in the Club Rossie bus, to play in the Connacht Go Games Day. The Connacht GAA Go Games days provided selected clubs from all over Connacht the experience of Croke Park. Roscommon Gaels were able to bring two teams giving all the group an opportunity to play in Croke Park. Prior to the games, the group were brought on a tour of the grounds and dressing room areas and got to see where the top teams in the country prepare for big match days. They were also given an insight into how Croke park is maintained on a daily basis by a friendly Croke Park tour guide. For the games competition, the two teams had three games each to play (Ardmoy, Swinford 1 & 2, Kinvara, Craughwell and Louisburgh. When it came to game time, the boys channelled all their excitment and nerves onto the pitch and played some lovely football, showing off what they have learnt at training all year. On the homeward bound journery the group stopped for refreshments at the Kinnegad Plaza compliments of McNulty Furniture. The Go Games initiative, which was spearheaded by former Connacht GAA Games Manager, John Tobin, first took place fourteen years ago and has continued giving opportunities to many clubs in the region. Many thanks to Cahal Cregg, Event Co-Ordinator for enabling this opportunity to this young group. Thanks to lead coach Mick Byrne, Seamus O'Neill, Football Coaching Officer, Robbie, Ronan, Ciaran and Gerry for the taking the boys on the trip for the day. Memories have been made forever. St Dominic’s 3-04 Roscommon Gaels 2-10 Back Row: L to R: Thomas Connolly, Ciaran O'Reilly, Liam Og Corcoran, Cian Reagan, Michael Corcoran, Joshua Lemos, Conor Grogan, Eoghan Carthy, Eoghan Keaveney, Rory Carthy, Thomas King Front Row: L to R: Jun Jie Lin, Jack Raftery, Michael Gillooly, Zawyal Khan, John McGuinness, Tommy Naughton, Jack Donnelly, Liam Naughton, Ben Donnellan, Aaron McAteer, Nathan Halligan. Our U-17 footballers got their championship off to a great start with a hard-earned win over a fancied St Dominic’s on Sat last. This was a very entertaining game with both sides having periods of dominance, but to their credit the Gaels lads held firm to come away with a deserved victory. The Gaels lads started the brighter with excellent passing and movement that saw the them run into an early 1-02 to 0-00 lead with scores from Rory Carthy and an excellently worked goal from John McGuinness. However, Dominic’s raced forward to goal themselves to give life to the game. From the resulting kick out their full forward received a well-placed ball to drill to the net for a second goal in 60 seconds and set the game up as a contest with just 10 minutes gone. The Gaels then responded with 4 more unanswered points (Eoghan Carty with 2 of them), John McGuinness and Jack Raftery one each, before the Dom’s responded with a point of their own to leave the half time score at 1-06 to 2-01 in our favour. We started the 2nd half well with two points to extend our lead, but the Dominic’s lads then managed to get a hold on the game and reduce the deficit to just one point with another well taken goal. With 15 mins to go the score line stood at 1-09 to 3-02. The one strength the Gaels showed in this game was their ability to respond to conceding a goal and this was evident again when a swift move led to a penalty for our lads which Liam Naughten dispatched to the net to restore a 4-point lead. St. Dominics did cut the lead again to 2 points with 2 quick scores and almost snatched the lead but for an excellent save from Cian Regan. A pivotal moment in this game as points from Rory Carthy frees seen us close out the game by 2-10 to 3-04. Credit to both teams for an entertaining game and no doubt these teams will have a say in the business end of the championship. Well done, Lads ROSCOMMON GAELS 2-04 : TULSK LORD EDWARDS 2-08 Back Row L-R: Darragh Donoghue, Myles McSharry, Roger Connelly, Harry King, Adam Killion, Sam Malbec Hannon, Mark Biesty, Odin Fallon, Michael Daly, Dylan Fallon, David King, Peter Cunningham, Hugh O’Connor Front Row L-R: Ben Martin, Ethan Hussey, Conor Gilmore, Daniel Fleming (Captain), Michael Byrne, Ronan Hoey, Jack Finn, Tom Sexton, Gerald Greene, Jack Walsh, Jeff Dolan, Timmy Corcoran. The Under 15 Div 4 Team played Tulsk Lord Edwards in St. Faithleachs GAA, Ballyleague on Friday June 10th in the League Final. With a strong gale blowing in off Lough Ree, the game was definitely a game of two halves. Tulsk Lord Edwards burst into the game claiming their first score within seconds of the ball been thrown in. They came again shortly after with a second score from a free and then a 3rd. With nerves possibly delaying the Gaels lads reaction the first score came, and they settled into the game with scores coming from Adam Killion, Tom Sexton and Mark Biesty and Sam Malbec Hannon. A good few chances of scores were missed by the Gaels lads with a half time score of 1-04 to 0-04 there was still work to be done in the second half. The second half for the Gaels lads unfortunately didn’t go to plan. Tulsk came out stronger with their game plan to attack our defence lines and the scores began go up on the board. The Roscommon Gaels lads didn’t lie down but continued to make a number of breaks however finding it difficult to add to the scores. This group of young lads have made great progress during the course of the league, we look forward to watching them develop further in the championship in the coming weeks ahead. |
