Gaeltacht Scholarships 2019 Rules for Gaeltacht scholarships 2019 This year there will be six scholarships of €300 with two confined to entrants who have competed in Scor/Scor na nÓg competitions. All entrants must be members of a GAA club in Co. Roscommon and a secondary School student in 2018/19 school year. Three of the scholarships are sponsored by and are confined to Colaiste Cu Chulainn in Gweedore. Courses in Gweedore are €595 and last for two weeks. Successful entrants in 2017/2018 are not eligible to enter in 2019. Scholarships are for attendance at residential Gaeltacht courses. To enter please complete an entry form and one essay from the two titles - 1. Na rialacha nua atá molta don pheil Gaelach – an bhfeabhasóidh siad an pheil mar chluiche? 2. An chóir níos mó a dhéanamh chun an iomáint agus camóige a chur chun cinn i gcontae Ros Comáin? Entries must be emailed (application form and essay) to the cultural officer at [email protected] or dropped in/posted to the county board offices to arrive by Friday January 11th, 2019. There is no cash alternative to the scholarship and successful candidates will have to complete a residential Gaeltacht summer course to receive the grant. Decision of the committee is final. Gaelic Player Development If your coach:player ratio for U6s or U8s is greater than 1:5 it’s time for a recruitment drive. Think about using an U16 squad on a rota. The players can become your Assistant Coaches, copying your lead and making numbers manageable. You’ll be surprised at the naturals you find. Are you in to win in 2018? The Club Lotto is an important fundraising tool for the club. If you are not already playing the lotto please consider signing up. You can sign-up and play for only €2 a week. You can also pick up an envelope in most shops and bars around town and play an individual draw, again for only €2 a draw. The póta óir/jackpot is now a massive €10,000!. Roscommon Gaels Club Lotto committee is sending out an appeal to all members and friends of the club looking for anyone who could assist in promoting and selling the club lotto. At present and for many years now a small but dedicated group of Roscommon Gaels members have been keeping our club lotto alive resulting in much needed funding flowing into the club. This funding is vital to ensure that we have the financial resources to support one of the finest GAA clubs in the country. Anyone who could assist with weekend ticket sales would be greatly appreciated. If you can help to make the above initiative a success you will be contributing in a significant way to the ongoing success of Roscommon Gaels. Please respond ASAP if interested. AGM AGM Our AGM took place in The Hyde on the 8th December. In what was one of the best attended AGMs of recent years, Chairperson Teresa Hession started off with the chairperson’s report detailing the adult club’s activities during the year. After that, Treasurer Harry Hoare went through the treasurer’s report listing the income and expenditure of the club during 2018. The election of officers then took place and the list of the selected 2019 officers is below. Several motions regarding membership fees and registration were also debated. The awards celebrate outstanding young people between the ages of 13 and 21 years. Roscommon-Longford Gardai, along with Longford County Council, recognise that a lot of good work is being done by young people in every community throughout both counties which should be rewarded. Awards will be considered for nominated young people, who by their presence make their communities a better place to live. There will be one overall winner of the Roscommon-Longford Garda Youth Awards for 2019, one Voluntary Group Achievement Award, which is open to nominations for two or more young people whose combined efforts have contributed positively to their communities and one Community Safety Award, which recognises an individual or group who has made their community a safer place to live in. There will be one Special Achievement Award, which is open to any young person who has defied the odds, or overcome difficult circumstances and whose commitment deserves recognition. The judging panel will decide upon a nominee in each category who will go forward to represent the Division at the National Garda Youth Awards at a ceremony in the Garda Síochána College at the end of April 2019. Underage Presentation Night A wonderful night was had by all at our Underage Presentation night on Friday 14th December. The main event of the evening was the presentation of the medals which was done by Dublin All Star James McCarthy. James told the large attendance that it was a honour to present the medals. He offered the players some great advice and posed for endless photographs with all the players, committee, supporters and guests. We would like to thank Edward Donnellan from Donnellan & Co Menswear for presenting the U16 Div 2 County football champions with 3/4 zip tops. Thank you Edward for your continued support, and to all our sponsors and supporters who have helped us out over the year. All in all in was a fantastic night that was enjoyed by all. The Roscommon "Walk While You Can" Committee is delighted to announce that the amount raised by the November 25th Lecarrow Walk for IMNDA, is approx. €13,000. Thanks so much to all who helped make this fundraiser the success that it was. To everybody who walked, donated, sponsored, promoted or helped in any way, thank you. Please know that 50% of monies raised goes directly to helping those affected by Motor Neurone Disease in Co. Roscommon. Scor na bPaisti Quiz Roscommon Gaels entered a team in the Scor na bPaisti Table Quiz held in Kilbride Community Centre on Sunday, 5th December. Ably represented by Aaron Dolan, Ethan Hussey, Gillian Greene and Gerald Greene, our club faced stiff competition from 20 primary schools/clubs around the county. At the end of the final round, with a scoreline of 28/32, we were in joint first position with Aughrim NS. We were unlucky to lose the tie-breaker by one point. We are incredibly proud of this achievement - the first time our club fielded a team in this quiz. Congratulations to all. Scór na nÓg Dean Crowe theatre Athlone was the venue for the County Scór na nÓg final which took place on Sunday, 9th December. Roscommon Gaels was represented by Jane King in Solo Singing. She sang 'Siúil A Rún' beautifully. While she wasn't victorious, we can be sure to hear a lot more of Jane in future. Maith thú a Shinéad! *Underage Presentation Night* Roscommon Gaels underage awards night for our underage teams will take place on Friday 14th of December at 7pm at The Hyde Centre. There will be a presentation of medals to our U12, U14 and U16 teams that won their respective county finals. Also on the night we will present most improved player awards for each of the above age group’s. This year we are delighted to announce that the teams will be presented with their medals by Dublin All Star James McCarthy. Tea, Coffee and refreshments will be served. It promises to be a wonderful evening so we hope you can make it on the night. On Sunday 16th December at 3.30pm at the Hyde Centre we will have a presentation of medals to our U8’s and U10’s. And, of course, Santa Claus will make a special visit. Its a day not to be missed and admission is free. She has addressed the United Nations. Roscommon Gaels have representation at all levels on our County Camogie Teams. Anyone interested in taking part is asked to email Rosaleen Carley at [email protected] with the following competitor details: name in Irish and English, date of birth, address and Roscommon Gaels membership number. The Scór na nÓg table quiz competition is for teams of four (4), all four team members must be registered members of their GAA Club and be u17 on 1st January 2019. The winners of the County Final will progress to to the All-Ireland Final, which will be held next February in Castlebar, Co Mayo. The Quizmaster shall have one set of questions for all teams. There shall be ten (10) rounds of eight (8) questions each. Questions to be "inclusive" comprising six (6) questions and two (2) questions of a higher standard in each round. Each round will include one (1) question "as gaeilge". Rounds of questions will be under the following headings: 1. Gaelic and Ladies Football 2. Hurling and Camogie 3. General GAA round 4.
