(from Sports Joe) The season is over for everyone and we're a good couple of months out from any meaningful or competitive fixtures. It's November and yet some of the stuff you'd hear even at this time of the year would drive you absolutely insane. One club up north have implemented this policy where the players have to send pictures of themselves in a WhatsApp group every single time they go to the gym - just so they can prove that they actually went to the gym. Another club are tallying up how many weights sessions and pitch sessions each of their men are doing and someone has worked it out as some sort of percentage to determine whether or not they've done an acceptable number of sessions. It's November. That cannot be stressed enough. Some of that stuff is madness anyway - talk about taking over people's lives and, God, you wouldn't need to guess how many of them have already muted notifications from those WhatsApp groups. It's too much as it is and then you take it into the context that... IT'S NOVEMBER. Every single season - it doesn't matter if it's a good year or a bad year - you grow pissed off with the club and you need a break. We all love the GAA and we'd be nowhere without it but, by the end of each campaign, you're ready to cut ties. The cabin fever, the pressure, the monotony all gathers and you just need to get away from each other - piss off completely and not come back until you're ready. But now it's November and boys are being hounded worse than they ever have been before. It'll feel like they've never had a break - not mentally anyway. What happens then is you get a club who completely loses the plot. Around last May, back when the evenings had stretched, the sun was shining on one of those timeless Irish summer nights, a video emerged on social media of a club team training... in a hall. They weren't outside, they weren't making the most of the weather or the pitch or any of the things that they might use to play football. No, they were inside working on their auditory response times. The players were in a line picking up different cones on different commands, trying to perfect how quickly they could all react to sound. What is going on? Go outside. Kick a bloody football, for God's sake. Where did that idea come from anyway? Did they think in the last five minutes of a championship game that their auditory response times were going to give them the advantage? That's just one depressing example of a culture that has swept the country. Conditioning coaches are analysing running techniques rather than working up a sweat with the precious time you have with these amateur players. People are working on relaxation techniques and spending more time doing prehab than actually doing any training that might ever leave you with the need for rehab. There's logic behind this stuff - if you're a professional. Maybe if you're an NFL athlete that's as perfectly trained as a human will ever be, then these supplements can improve you by a tenth of a second but Gaelic football coaches mostly get two nights a week to work with their teams and a lot of them are rarely thinking about improving their football. No-one's saying that your team shouldn't be conditioned. No-one's stupid enough to argue that power isn't one of the biggest qualities of a GAA player but boys squat more than they do kick pass nowadays and coaches are coming back at the start of every year with a new idea that's going to be the one that gets them over the line. They're looking for the extra 1% and, in the process, they neglect the 99% that's required to play this game. So they focus on their little fad for the first five months of the season and then, when the action starts, it all quickly gets abandoned and they soon learn they've left it too late. Boys just take their eyes off the ball. Literally. Sometimes it's not just the newest or quirkiest trend. How many times have you been almost teased about not seeing any footballs? "You can forget about the balls tonight." How many times have you sat in a changing room after a loss and had a list of incriminating stats read out? The breaking ball count wasn't good enough, the kickout percentages were pathetic - that sort of thing. Then you get down to the field on Tuesday night and you run. You crawl. You do push-ups and this is supposed to help you go for a breaking ball better or tighten up your kickout strategy. The best teams get the balance right. When they're in the gym, they're working hard - they're not practicing functional movement and landing techniques. They play football in training and they do it with fierce intensity. The best managers adopt common sense and, mostly, they practice playing the sport they're going to be playing in games. It's funny how that helps them. Some of them might look for the 1% that they're missing. Fine. But they won't do it at the expense of the 99%. And they sure as hell won't find it working on auditory responses anyway. Lotto Jackpot - €10,000 NO WINNER Numbers Drawn - 3, 4, 5, 23 The weekly winners of €30 were • John Earley, Ard Aoibhínn. • Shane Nerney, Abbeytown. • Shane Costello, Larry’s. • Bunty Geraghty, C/o Helen Farmer. The Conference programme is currently being finalised, with information available from https://learning.gaa.ie/conference2019 and @gaalearning LGFA U16 Football: Hard luck to our U16 girls who were beaten in an epic battle Saturday evening played under lights in Lisnamult. One of the best games on The U16 Roscommon Gaels Calendar this year between two fantastic sides. The high tempo started from throw in and turned out to be a cracker of a game. Roscommon Gaels were fierce in every contest and put in a solid team performance. After fulltime it was all level nothing could seperate the two teams! Score Roscommon Gaels 1-9 Shannon Gaels 2-6. In extra time the girls played their hearts out but lost out on a score line of Roscommon Gaels 0-2 Shannon Gaels 2-6. Well done to this fantastic team and their mentors. The future is bright for these young ladies. U13 County Development Well done to our 4 Roscommon Gaels Girls Ava Mulry, Jennifer Morris, Zara Fallon and Shauna Walsh who competed against Donegal on Saturday with the U13 Roscommon Development Squad. Minor Camogie Report 2018 The Roscommon Gaels minor panel in 2018 consisted of 21 dedicated camogie players, 6 of whom were still U16 in 2018. The older girls in this bunch of minors were the group of players who participated when Roscommon Gaels first entered two U12 teams in 2012 as a mechanism of maximising participation and maximising game time for young camogie players. These minor players also made up the majority of the Roscommon Gaels 2018 Junior (adult) camogie panel and competed well for their club throughout the summer of 2018. The minor championship is the only competition for minor camogie players in Roscommon and it is normally fixed for October and is to be finished before 24th October each year, according to a Roscommon Co Camogie Board bye-law. All Junior and Senior camogie clubs in Roscommon play minor players at adult level. Some to do this because they need minor players in order field at adult level, e.g. Roscommon Gaels. Other clubs appear to play only their best players even if that means playing minors instead of adults. The result is that minor players involved in Junior and Senior camogie are playing adult camogie throughout the summer and autumn and are deemed not to be available to play in a minor competition with their peer group. In addition, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that adult players fall away from camogie in some clubs because their places on the teams are increasingly taken up by minor players. Since the minor competition is then fixed when all adult competitions are finished by which time it is getting late in the year, the Co Board splits the six minor clubs into two groups of three. In 2018, Roscommon Gaels were in Group 1 with Pádraig Pearses and St Dominics, whilst Group 2 comprised Four Roads, Oran and Athleague. What all this means is that minor players who don’t play adult camogie or only play Junior and not Senior camogie, train from early in the year right into October and November with no guarantee of any more than two minor games. Players who are not available for one or both of those matches, get less. Invariably in October and November, the weather is deteriorating, dark winter nights are setting in, and school and college commitments make it difficult for minor teams to train during the week; and matches can only be held at weekends. It is difficult to keep players and managers motivated under these circumstances as one can imagine. This current approach to the minor competition is flawed and does not serve the camogie needs of minor players in County Roscommon adequately. In early 2018, Roscommon Gaels club put forward proposals to change the minor competition to (a) a round robin challenge so that each club would be guaranteed a minimum of five games with their peer group, and (b) an earlier time in the year. Roscommon Gaels put forward dates in the fixtures calendar when additional matches could be played in August and September. However, none of these proposals were successful at Co Board level. Roscommon Gaels will make similar proposals for the 2019 minor competition. Roscommon Gaels played St Dominics on Sunday 28th October in Lisnamult and although played a good game, lost by four points on a scoreline of 4:3 to 1:8. St Domincs were awarded their first goal early in the game by the referee when the St Dominics umpire declared a goal. Despite the protestations of the Gaels umpire that the ball had not crossed the goal-line and despite the admission by the St Dominics umpire to the referee and Gaels umpire at half time that the ball had in fact not crossed the goal-line, the goal stood. Roscommon Gaels played away to Pádraig Pearses on Friday 2nd November at 3pm as fixed by the Co Board Fixtures Committee. The weather was atrocious, bitterly cold, windy and wet. The girls put up a great battle but unfortunately bowed out on a scoreline of 2:7 to 1:1. The minor camogie team management and coaching group consisted of Jimmy Brennan, John Casey, Ríona McGuinness, Tom Killion and Patricia Torpey. The management would like to thank all of these players for their great commitment to camogie and to Roscommon Gaels during 2018. We very much appreciate the sacrifices all the players made to be at matches with the team and we also very much appreciate the support which parents gave us during the year. That concludes the minor camogie report for 2018. Football Minor Football: The minor footballers were defeated by St. Dominics in the championship final on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-17 in Ballyforan on Saturday. This was a tremendous game of football which could have gone either way.Dominics started well but the Gaels came roaring into the game with a briiliant Conor McNamara goal to lead by two points at half time. The Gaels looked in difficulty early in the second half but a brilliant individual goal by Daire McDonnell brought them right back into it.Unfortunately Dominics finished stronger and secured a narrow victory. While its obviously very disappointing to lose, the lads have had a good season overall. They trained hard during the year and were a credit to their club and families. The 4 ways you know the GAA season is finishing up for the year. We’ve all experienced one of these. November is just around the corner, the All-Ireland is long gone and now it’s a matter for county finals and leagues to be run off. For many of us there is nothing to play for at this stage and it’s a matter of playing that one last game and looking forward to next season. But, just in case you weren’t sure the GAA season is ending here are four ways you can certain it is. The 21’s team is training Okay, this is sign number one. The under-21 team is training. They might struggle for numbers, they might not, that all depends on the club but you can be sure that they’ll either be training alongside the seniors or just before or after. You remember back to them fine days, the craic was mighty, your body was just sweating for more matches and it gave you just that but now you know because they’re all coming together your season is coming to a close. The county lads are back Jaysus, where were you all year? Don’t answer that. This one will hit home with the Dublin and Mayo lads out there the most, you don’t see him for 10 months of the year but sure at least they’re back now. You notice that the tactics in training have changed, it’s now all about passing it to the county lad and see what he can do. The same thing happens for your last match too, and he tears it up. ‘Why can’t you play all the time?’ you think to yourself and you can’t wait to play with him again this time next year. Team nights out are more regular Normally there has to be a big club event to bring all the lads together. Yes, we all have our little friend groups and the likes of birthdays etc. can get a few boys out but now, with the end in sight, Friday and Saturday night drinks are in sight. Training intensity drops Sure, what more can you do now? You’re all as fit as you’re going to be at this stage of the season so what’s the point in trying hard now? And why are we all in the gym, the last match is next week it’ll hardly make a difference? Most teams have nothing left to play for in their respective leads so why train like there is? Here's the 5 new rule changes the GAA are proposing to experiment with in Gaelic football. THE GAA’S STANDING committee on playing rules have issued the five new rule changes that they are proposing to experiment with in Gaelic football. A restriction in handpasses, a plan to have all sidelines kicked forward, the introduction of an attacking mark, the implementation of a sin bin and a new kick-out rule involving zoning are to be considered. The committee will now engage in a consultation process in relation to these months during the month of October with players, coaches, referees and officials all set to be dealt with. If approved by Coiste Bainistíochta, the proposed rule changes would be implemented as a trial during the 2019 Allianz football leagues and if successful there, could be approved by Congress 2020 for implementation in that year’s championship. Here are the five proposed rule changes: 1. Handpass To introduce a restriction of three consecutive passes of the ball with the fist or open hand by players of the team in possession. 2. Sideline Kick That the ball shall be played in a forward direction from the kick. Exception: In the case of a sideline kick being taken by an attacking player on or inside the opponents’ 13m line, the ball may be kicked in any direction. 3. The Mark To extend the application of the mark to the clean catching of the ball on or inside the 20m line from a kick delivered on or beyond the 45m line without it touching the ground. In the case of a mark being awarded to an attacking player on or inside the 20m line, the free, if availed of, shall be taken from the point on the 20m line directly in line where the Mark is awarded. In the case of a mark being awarded to a defending player on or inside the 20m line, the free kick, if availed of, shall be taken from the point where the mark is awarded. The application of the mark in the two areas of it arising (i.e. as in current rule and in new proposal) shall be standardised as follows: - Up to 15 seconds shall be allowed for a free to be taken from a Mark. - If the referee determines that the player who makes the mark has been injured in the process and unable to take the kick, the referee shall direct the player’s nearest team mate to take the kick. - A score may be made from a free awarded for a mark. - The normal rules governing free-kicks shall apply (e.g. players being 13m from the ball before it is kicked). Exception: A free-kick from a mark shall be taken from the hand(s) only. If a player opts to ‘play on’ when awarded a mark, he may be challenged i.e. provisions (b) (i) and (ii) of the current mark rule shall not apply during the experimentation. 4. Sin-Bin The penalty on the day for a black card infraction or two yellow card infractions – an ordering off for ten minutes in a sin-bin. A subsequent black card infraction shall be penalised by the showing of a Black Card followed by a Red Card. A subsequent yellow card infraction shall be penalised by the showing of a Yellow Card followed by a Red Card. In either case there shall be no substitution allowed. The maximum number of substitutions in normal time to return to five. The duties of a referee and sideline official to be amended in accordance with this proposal. 5. Kick-Out/Zoning For a kickout, two players only from each team shall be positioned between the two 45m lines. The goalkeeper and a maximum of six players from each team shall be behind the respective 45m lines, until the ball is kicked. The ball from the kick-out shall travel beyond the 45m line before being played by a player of the defending team. Other rules relating to the kick-out to remain unchanged. Penalties: 1. For another player on the team taking a kick-out to play the ball before it has travelled outside the 45m line or has been played by an opposing player. Penalty: (i). Cancel kick-out (ii). Throw in the ball on defenders’ 20m line in front of the scoring space. 2. For a player to cross a 45m line before the ball is kicked for the kick-out. 3. For a player(s) to, in the opinion of the referee, deliberately seek to delay the kick-out by not retreating behind the 45m lines in a timely manner. Penalty for the above Fouls: A 45m free off the ground and in front of the scoring space shall be awarded to the opposing team. 4. For a player(s) of each team to simultaneously cross the 45m line(s) before the ball is kicked from the kick-out: Penalty: A throw-in ball shall be awarded on the centre of the 45m line involved or at the centre of the field (if infringements are made on both 45m lines). Under GAA rule, changes to the playing rules of Gaelic Games are only possible in years divisible by 5, making 2020 a year that permits changes to the playing rules. “Proposed changes are designed to enhance the core skills of Gaelic football. The committee will now embark on a period of consultation with all of the key stakeholders involved in the playing of our games. This feedback is important, and we also know that the ultimate test of any proposals is when we see them implemented on the field of play.” Communication was also sought from all 32 GAA county boards as well as overseas units seeking feedback on the existing playing rules of Gaelic football, as well as holding a meeting between the SCPR and the Chair of the Referees’ Development Committee. It should be stressed that these proposals are on an experimental basis only and will be subject to a review. During 2018 much of the Committee’s focus has been on Gaelic football. It has also reviewed the playing rules of hurling as well as a number of other areas that span both codes and will consider these in much more detail during the second and third years of its three-year term. |
